W. L. Gore Lecture Series in Management Science

The Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics
proudly presents the
W. L. Gore Lecture Series in Management Science

The W.L. Gore Lecture Series in Management Science, which is sponsored by an endowment from the Gore family, will feature experts in the application of probability, statistics, and experimental design to decision making, including applications in academia, business, government, engineering, and medicine. The lecture series recognizes the key role that the fields of probability, statistics, and experimental design have played in the success of W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. The inaugural lecture in this series was given in March 2011.

Dr. Ron Snee - "Statistical Thinking – Improving the Effectiveness of Analytical Studies”

Talk Highlights

It is broadly recognized that statistical methods are very useful in the design, control and improvement of businesses and organization of all types. W. L. Gore brought this to our attention early on in his 1952 book, “Statistical Methods for Chemical Experimentation”. Statistical methods are used today in industries and functions varying from electronics, pharmaceuticals and biotech to Google searches and business analytics. In the last two decades it has been found that Statistical Thinking provides strategic framework for the use of statistical methods vastly increasing its impact. In this presentation Statistical Thinking is defined and its use is illustrated with applications. The integration of Statistical Thinking and statistical methods is discussed. Central to the discussion are the critical elements of statistical thinking – process, variation and data. Attention is brought to the central importance of the “process” that provides the context for the work. Examples are used to show how Statistical Thinking can speed up the process of experimentation as well as improve the effectiveness of how problems are solved and how processes are controlled and improved.

Dr. James M. Lucas - "Statistical Systems”

Talk Highlights

Statistical Systems combine statistical techniques to better solve important business problems. Two statistical systems are Strategy of Experimentation (SOE), a system for designing business and scientific experiments, and Product Quality Management (PQM), a quality control and quality improvement system. We describe our work on these statistical systems and give illustrations of specific problems that have been addressed with these methods.
