Departmental Contributions to the Strategic Path to Prominence

DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING AND MIS

  1. A Diverse and Stimulating Undergraduate Academic Environment

    • Enhance and enrich an already nationally-recognized accounting program and initiate the integration of IFRS into the curriculum.

    • Revise and promote the MIS major and minor. Employer demand is very strong for MIS majors, and the minor has proven to be a career enhancing addition for all major fields of study.

    • Institute a mentoring program for Accounting and MIS students from under-represented groups to ensure their retention and success rates.

    • Develop a one-credit course for students to work toward the qualification of Certified IS Auditor (CISA).

  2. A Premiere Research and Graduate University

    • Hire and support research-productive diverse faculty to enhance the scholarship reputation of the department.

  3. Excellence in Professional Education

    • Implement a 4 + 1 BS/MS in accounting degree to comply with legislation requiring 150 credits to be certified as a CPA.

    • In cooperation with the Office of Professional and Continuing Studies, develop and offer a Certificate in IFRS and other high-demand professional programs.

  4. The Initiative for the Planet

  5. The Global Initiative

    • Develop a course in IFRS to be offered at the graduate level, cross listed as an elective undergraduate course. This course will contribute to the internationalization of the curriculum and will fill a need to train professional accountants in this region who will require IFRS certification.

    • Develop additional Study Abroad offerings for both Accounting and MIS majors.

  6. The Engaged University

    • Expand outreach efforts to major employers and alumni to identify new career opportunities for students and to strengthen offerings to ensure currency and relevancy in the Accounting and MIS disciplines.

    • Promote and expand professional outreach programs in the community, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit program for low income families.

    • Continue to connect with and engage the local business and non-profit communities in UD/business partnerships through the MIS project class in which students develop meaningful solutions to real world problems.
