Stock Market Game

What is the Stock Market Game?

The Stock Market Game (SMG)is a 10-week program designed to introduce students to the global economy and the world of finance and investing. Teams of 1-6 students maintain a portfolio of $100,000 on the Internet and vie for divisional awards. The SMG has 3 levels of competition: Grades 4-6, Grades 7-8, and Grades 9-12.  In Delaware, the SMG is offered exclusively by the Center for Economic Education & Entrepreneurship at the University of Delaware.

This high-interest game provides an exciting way to learn about economics and the stock market. Teachers report that the program has tremendous motivational value and is a unique way to introduce young people to free market economic systems.

What do I need to know?

To learn all you need to know about the Stock Market Game, on the homepage click "Teachers New to SMG" and "Teacher Support Center."  Then open the tabs under "Understanding SMG" and "Manage Student Portfolios."  Browse or try your hand at the tutorials.  Contact Marion Jacobs, the Delaware Stock Market Game Coordinator at jacobsmatudel [dot] edufor additional assistance.

**Upcoming Game Dates**

Fall 2012:  October 8 - December 14

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO PARTICIPATE every week of the game, although teams may if they wish. Flexible entry and exit is allowed and encouraged. Portfolio balances begin to accrue interest from the day the team IDs and passwords are assigned, so early registration is recommended.  Portfolio balances move with the markets.

What is the cost?

Invest just $20 per team of 1-6 students and receive all of the following! (Due to the educational value of the SMG, most schools or PTAs pay the fees.)

  • Secure access to team portfolio accounts
  • Ability to trade any stock on the NYSE, AMEX, or NASDAQ exchanges at current prices
  • Portfolios that are easy to use - help on every page
  • Nightly updated portfolios
  • Daily competitive rankings reports
  • Access to student accounts from teacher's own administrative login
  • Learning Resource Center with downloadable lessons, entire curriculum packages and correlations to national and state standards.

Are there awards for the winning teams?

Trophies and certificates are awarded to the top team in each division at an awards reception at the University of Delaware.

Why is the SMG such a great learning tool?
