Management of Information Systems Major
MIS makes IT happen. Students with an MIS major or minor don’t just understand technology: they understand how technology can best be used by businesses. The focus of technology within a business context differentiates MIS from other IT-related disciplines, such as computer science and computer information systems. The study of MIS includes a study of core technology concepts but differs from traditional computer science in that MIS concentrates on the application and management of information systems in business. Students graduate with a unique combination of technology, management, and business skills that position them favorably to design and apply computerized information systems solutions to business problems and align them with strategic business objectives.
MIS Major and Minor students participate in the MIS Projects Course each spring. Student teams work with local businesses to solve a real business problem. This celebrated course provides opportunities for students to interact with a real client and transition into the business world.
What Kind of Jobs are Available?
The study of MIS is relevant for a wide range of occupations in business, government, and private practice. All public and private organizations use information systems to process data, run operations, and communicate with the rest of the world. Graduates of our MIS program are aggressively recruited by large and small companies including IBM, CSC, all of the major banks, all major consulting firms, public accounting firms, and large and small corporations for a variety of jobs.
Are Internships Available?
MIS students often chose to intern during their summers in order to obtain career-related experience. Because of the program's excellent reputation, many recruiters seek MIS majors at Delaware for both public accounting firms and public/private industries upon graduation. Top companies come from all over the U.S. including the major cities from New York City to Washington, D.C.
