Economics Major Requirements-An Overview

Our undergraduate course offerings for majors fall into four broad groups:

  • Introductory Courses / Principles of Economics -- ECON151 and ECON152

    • Usually taken in the freshman year.

    • Must be taken in sequence.

    • Offered every semester.

    • ECON100 is for non-majors only -- you will not get economics credit for this class.

  • Intermediate Micro and Macro Theory -- ECON300 / ECON301, ECON303

    • Usually taken sophomore and junior years.  These are required courses.

    • B.A. majors take ECON300, B.S. majors take ECON301.  Do not take them both and do not take ECON251 (for minors and non-majors only).

    • You must take ECON300 or ECON301 before taking ECON303.  Those courses are a pre-requisite for ECON303.

  • Economics Field Courses for Majors and Non-Majors -- ECON302 and 305 through ECON395.

    • Usually taken sophomore through senior years.  These are elective courses, designed for a mixed audience of majors and non-majors.

    • Pre-requisite for all 3XX field courses is ECON151 or ECON152 or both.

    • Some 3XX courses satisfy University group requirements and/or multi-cultural course requirement.

  •  Economics Field Courses for Majors  -- ECON406 through ECON490

    • Usually taken junior and senior years.  These are elective courses, designed for majors and an occasional well-prepared non-major.  You must take at least two of these courses, but we encourage you to take more than the minimum.  Here is where you will really learn economics.

    • Pre-requisite for all 4XX field courses is ECON300 / ECON301 or ECON303 or both. Some courses also require ECON422 (Econometrics) or calculus.

    • We strongly encourage majors to take these courses instead of ECON3XX courses.
