Upon the recommendation from the Committee on Graduate Studies, the Faculty Senate approved the MS in Finance program on March 3, 2008.  The first class started in Fall 2008.  Applications are now being accepted for Spring 2009.
 
David Cicero's solo- authored paper, " The manipulation of executive stock option exercise strategies: Information timing and backdating," was accepted for The Journal of Finance. June 5, 2009.

Several references to the MSF Program were included in the April 6, 2009 BusinessWeek article entitled "Master's of the Financial Universe" on MS in Finance programs.

Xiaoxia Lou presented her new paper entitled “Do Investors Underreact to Earnings Surprises?” to Finance faculty on April 27, 2009.

Charles Elson was quoted on the front page of the Wall Street Journal on April 3, 2009 in the article entitled "CEO Pay Sinks Along With Profits."

Jeff Harris ranks 402 on the list of prolific authors in the 7 leading finance journals according to a study just released on the Social Sciences Research Network which identifies the most prolific authors in finance journals from 1959 to 2008, a five-decade period which substantially encompasses the maturation period of the finance discipline.  Of the 17,601 authors that have published in finance journals, the study lists the top 977 authors in 7 leading finance journals, and the top 983 authors in 26 core finance journals.  Raj Varma (414), Bob Schweitzer (975) and Jeff Harris (976) list in the top prolific authors across the 26 core finance journals.  March 2009

Raj Varma's paper, "Voluntary versus Forced Financial Restatements: The Role of Board Independence" has been accepted for publication at the Financial Analysts Journal.  This is Raj's four publication examining the role of boards of directors in firms that overstate earnings or commit fraud.  March 2009

Helen Bowers served as a discussant at the 2008 Frontiers of Finance conference in Ambergris Caye, Belize on December 14, 2008.

 

Paul Laux has developed an open door on an undergraduate-student, semester-long exchange program with the University of Padova in Italy.  November 2008

 

Xiaoxia Lou's paper "Do Short Sellers Detect Overpriced Firms?  Evidence from SEC Enforcement Actions" has been funded by the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance.  November 2008

 

Xiaoxia Lou and Jonathan Karpoff won the Best Paper Award as chosen by CRSP Forum 2008 attendees.  The paper is titled "Do Short Sellers Detect Overpriced Firms?  Evidence from SEC Enforcement Actions."  The CRSP Forum is an excellent conference organized by CRSP (Center for Research in Security Prices) and U. of Chicago.  September 2008

Jay Coughenour served as moderator and Bob Schweitzer as panelist at the Lerner College of Business and Economics' panel presentation entitled "Wall Street Woes and Main Street Miseries" on September 24, 2008.  The panel of experts spoke to a packed crowd of more than 400 in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. duPont Music Building.  September 2008

 

Tim Detwiler took sabbatical leave during the Fall 2008 semester to teach in Italy as part of the CIMBA Program through the University of Iowa.  Fall 2008

 

Bob Schweitzer received the second highest of 19 scores from students in course evaluations and third highest of 19 in instructor evaluations for the course he taught during Summer 2008 at the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado.  Summer 2008

 

Ken Biederman, Tisa Silver, and Bob Schweitzer were nominated for the 2008 Excellence in Teaching Award.  Spring 2008
