Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Major
The Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management (HRIM) major is a four year major with a curriculum based in liberal arts, business and specialized courses for the hospitality industry. The on-campus Vita Nova Restaurant and Courtyard by Marriott offer students hands-on experience where they can round out their academic knowledge. Vita Nova is a student-operated laboratory featuring a 60-seat dining room, exhibition, teaching and demonstration kitchens with state of the art video and satellite capabilities. The 126-room Courtyard by Marriott, with high tech conference room featuring wireless computers and video conferencing facilities, offers students valuable experience in sales, marketing, revenue management, front office and housekeeping.
Hospitality Industry Studies Major
The Hospitality Industry Studies major places emphasis on quantitative and analytical skills to support decision making in hospitality businesses. The curriculum is designed for students with a strong career interest in analytical and support functions such as consulting, commercial real estate transaction services, sales and marketing, revenue management, e-business and hospitality information technology in the global hospitality industry. The major prepares students for careers in the hospitality industry that require superior analytical and problem-solving skills at the conceptual level. Students, in active consultation with faculty advisors, will choose a selected combination of courses that will build their knowledgebase towards a key area of focus. The areas of focus include Transaction Advisory Services, Hospitality Sales and Marketing and Hospitality Information Management.
Restaurant Management Minor
The minor in Restaurant Management provides a foundation for understanding the global food and beverage industry. Additionally, the required laboratory experience provides students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in an award-winning full-service restaurant. Applications are available in the HRIM Departmental offices, located in Raub Hall, and reviewed on a rolling basis. Not open to Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management and Hospitality Industry Studies majors. Students seeking a minor in Restaurant Management may only take one of the required Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management courses at another institution.
