Professor Paul Sestak, AIA, is an associate professor within HRIM and a registered architect. Professor Sestak is a graduate of Drexel University and as been teaching for the past 16 years. Professor Sestak is one of the few University of Delaware faculty to win two university-wide teaching awards. In 1990, he was awarded the University Excellence in Undergraduate Advisement Award. The following year Professor Sestak was the recipient of the University Excellence in Teaching Award. Prof. Sestak also holds secondary appointment to the Center for Historic Architecture and Design and a tertiary appointment to consumer studies.
In addition to teaching, he is active in several committees including the CHEP College Safety Committee and the CHEP College Council where he served as a past Chair. He has served seven years on New Castle County's historic review board.
Prof. Sestak's research is centered around the automobile culture, tourism, roadside architecture, and how it all worked together. He coined the word "Autotecture" to define this unique form of roadside architecture that was developed to support, attract and enhance the automobile culture. Additional research is being conducted on the Mill Creek hundred area of New Castle County focusing on its change from farming communities to suburbanization and commercialization.
Prof. Sestak's architectural design expertise includes several hospitality projects including the barn at Montchanin Village Inn, McGlynn's Pub and Restaurants, Molly D'arcy's Irish Pub, Sydney's Jazz and Blues Restaurant and the Food Bank of Delaware Training Kitchen. Other projects include work in historic preservation, commercial and residential architecture.
