Websites Migration FAQ

Q1:      Why is the system being taken down?

The main reasons are because the hardware is beyond its warranty and the software is no longer supported.  In addition, these sites don’t conform to the universities web standards as specificed by the Office of Communication and Marketing.

Q2:      Why doesn’t the college purchase a new server?

That would be fine except that FrontPage and the server-side software aren’t supported by Microsoft.  UD provides more options for personal websites, so having something in the college is redundant.

Q3:      I use my BUEC site for my classes to post course notes and handouts.  What are my options now?

Sakai is a course management system and is available at http://www.udel.edu/sakai.  Your Sakai course rosters are populated by UD IT, so they should be ready for students to login once you create your website.  Please see the UD Sakai documentation for creating a new course site at http://www.udel.edu/sakai/training/faculty/basics_faculty.html.

Q4:      I use my BUEC site as my personal webpage (Internet-facing).  What are my options now?

UD supports both content management systems WordPress (http://sites.udel.edu/) & Drupal (http://www.udel.edu/it/udrupal/) for personal websites.

UD also supports Google Sites (http://gsites.udel.edu/).

Q5:      I use my BUEC site to contact page to list my vita, research papers, etc.  What are my options now?

Faculty and staff contact pages exist out on the Lerner website.  If you would like to have a page created or updated, please send any e-mail to lerner-webatudel [dot] edu.

Q6:      Are there any UD web resources available that I can use to collaborate with others outside the university for research projects?

The university has an installation of Microsoft SharePoint just for this purpose.  It can be found at http://teamwork.udel.edu.  The SharePoint documentation (http://www.udel.edu/it/help/sharepoint/) describes how to request a site and how to login.

Q7:      Is there any assistance to help get my site migrated?

The Lerner IT staff is available to help faculty and staff get their sites migrated. Please submit a help request at http://www.buec.udel.edu/help.
